Gain staging is important. Learn it. It starts with your instrument, then your mic, then your interface, then compression, limiting, etc. It’s never as simple as starting with a low signal and turning it up. There are multiple stages to to go through to get that loudness in the end. Don’t overcompress. Instead, use multiple compressors, each one carrying a small load.
